Escaping the Grid

These rainy, cold spring days have been perfect for staying close to the fireplace in the studio. In the last few weeks, I've been creating more fused glass art pieces. I am drawn to long and thin shapes. Since my kiln is only 8 inches square, I mounted three pieces of fused glass vertically to create a longer piece.

I am also drawn to art that have grids incorporated into them. Although, Frank Lloyd Wright is best known for his amazing architecture, he created a lot of glass pieces using grids as the main part of the design.

And then there is the art by Piet Mondrian...

I thought I'd try creating a fused glass piece using stringers (glass shaped like spaghetti) to create a grid.

This piece makes me smile because if you notice...there is a little rectangle on the bottom left that is escaping the grid! Hooray! Go! Go! Go! I used red stringer above and below it to symbolize the idea that you have to follow your heart to escape the grid.
