An Afternoon with the Dalai Lama

The Dalai Lama was kind enough to visit Toronto on my birthday so Angie bought tickets as a gift to this very special event. It was amazing to be among a crowd of 18,000 people who were all listening intently to this wise and spiritual man. You could have heard a pin drop. His talk was entitled "Human Approaches to World Peace." His message was simple. Everyone deserves to be happy. That when we look at fellow human beings on a fundamental level - we are all the same. When we only look at the secondary level-differences in race, religion, and beliefs without compassion or tolerance, we continue to have conflict. I was personally moved by his infectious laugh, his sense of humour even when talking about profound issues, and his humility about his role as a leader. He donned a baseball cap to keep the bright lights from his eyes, that made him even more endearing as he delivered his wise words. Somehow, we felt lighter and happier after we heard him talk. It is uplifting to hear someone encourage us to be warm-hearted, compassionate and kind with ourselves and others. My favourite quote from the Dalai Lama is "Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible."
